Readings

First Reading

Philippians 1:18b-26

My brothers and sisters, what matters is this: that Christ is proclaimed in every way, whether out of false motives or true; and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance. It is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be put to shame in any way, but that by my speaking with all boldness, Christ will be exalted now as always in my body, whether by life or by death.

For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labour for me; and I do not know which I prefer. I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 42:1-2, 3-4b, 4cd, 5

R: My soul is thirsting for the living God.

As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God?

R: My soul is thirsting for the living God.

My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me continually, “Where is your God?” These things I remember, as I pour out my soul.

R: My soul is thirsting for the living God.

I went with the thong and led them in procession to the house of God, with glad shouts and shouts of thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.

R: My soul is thirsting for the living God.

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.

R: My soul is thirsting for the living God.

Gospel Acclamation

Cantor: Alleluia, Alleluia.
All: Alleluia.

Matthew 11:20ab

Take my yoke upon you; learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart.

All: Alleluia.

Gospel

Luke 14:1, 7-11

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. When Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honour, he told them a parable. “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give this person your place,’ and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place.

“But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.

“For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Prayer over the Offerings

Blessed Virgin Mary
Blessed Virgin Mary
  1. Receive, O Lord, we ask, the prayers of your people with the sacrificial offerings, that, through the intercession of Blessed Mary the Mother of your Son, no petition may go unanswered, no request be made in vain. Through Christ our Lord.
    Or
May the humanity of your Only Begotten Son, come, O Lord, to our aid, and may he, who at his birth from the Blessed Virgin did not diminish but consecrated her integrity, by taking from us now our wicked deeds, make our oblation acceptable to you. Thorugh Christ our Lord.
  2. As we honour the memory of the Mother of your Son, we pray, O Lord, that the oblation of this sacrifice may by your grace make of us an eternal offering to you. Through Christ our Lord.

  6. We offer you, O Lord, these offerings of conciliation and praise, humbly asking that, following the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may bring our very selves as a holy sacrifice pleasing to you. Through Christ our Lord.
  7. May the offerings your people make in commemoration of Blessed Mary be acceptable to you, O Lord, for by her virginity· she pleased you and in humility conceived your Son, our Lord. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
  8. Look, O Lord, upon the prayers and offerings of your faithful, presented in commemoration of Blessed Mary, the Mother of God, that they may be pleasing to you and may confer on us your help and forgiveness. Through Christ our Lord.

The Preface

Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right and just.

I. The Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, and to praise, bless, and glorify your name on the feast day of the Blessed ever-Virgin Mary. For by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit she conceived your Only Begotten Son, and without losing the glory of virginity, brought forth into the world the eternal Light, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him the Angels praise your majesty, Dominions adore and Powers tremble before you. Heaven and the Virtues of heaven and the blessed Seraphim worship together with exultation. May our voices, we pray, join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim:

All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Sign of Peace
